Louis Bachmann, an organist in Obernai, Alsace in 1882, contributed an Offertoire solennel Le journal des organistes 1882 [LJO].

Bail, G.S.     USA    b. 17th Jan 1898, Cherry Creek, NY; d. 21st Nov 1996, Beaumont, CA

Grace Shattuck Bail studied at the Darlington Seminary in West Chester, Pennsylvania, and lived in Beaumont, California, for over 40 years. Also the author of 10 books of published poetry, her Summer Day: A Voluntary 1935, Musica: An Offertory 1936 and further pieces are unpublished.

Baker, M.E.     USA   Contemporary

Meredith Elaine Baker has served as organist to Holy Trinity Chapel at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York, since 1991. Her Partita on Unity” 2005 is unpublished.

Bakker, R.     The Netherlands   b. 1969

Renco Bakker studied in Amersfoort with H. Seldenthuis and then with Jaap Zwart. Organist of the Lichtenbergkapel (a hospital chapel) and of a Dutch Reformed Church in Amersfoort, he has published Vier psalmen (Carillon en Toccata Psalm 29: 1, Koraalbewerking Psalm 80: 5, Liedbewerking Psalm 91: 1, Koraalbewerking Psalm 119: 3) 2004 CTQ] and Drie gezangen (Toccata on “Halleluja, lof zij het Lam”, Aria and Chorale on “Jezus leven van mijn leven” and Variations on “Vreugde, vreugde, louter vreugde”) 2005 [CTQ].

Balthasar-Florence, H. M.     Belgium   b. 1844, Arlon, d. 1915, Paris, France

Henri Matthieu (Mathias) Balthasar-Florence appears in some sources as being a female “Florence Balthasar” and in other sources his music can be found catalogued under “Florence”. It may well be that Balthasar was a first name that this became hyphenated to a family name of Florence after the common French fashion. He may have been a violinist for, in addition to church music, he published a violin concerto, violin pieces and Aimer: Melodie (violin, piano and organ with cello ad lib.) [HGL]. This was a transcription of a song he composed in 1890. He was also the manufacturer of pianos and harmoniums, his factory being in Namur where a street is named after him.

Banzolà, G. M.     Italy   b. 1976, Vigevano

Gian Mauro Banzolà is organist of S. Carlo Borromeo and teaches in Vigevano. His Preludio sul canto “In Notte Placida”, Toccata, Adagio and Fantasia in BI and Preludio sul canto “Adeste Fideles” are unpublished.

Baradaprana, P.     USA   b. 22nd April 1923, Los Angeles, CA

Born Doris Ludwig, she studied at Los Angeles City College. At the age of 21, she enetered a convent and as Pravrajika Baradaprana she is a senior nun of the Vedanta Society of Southern California at Sarada Convent, Santa Barbara, California. Her Three Preludes 1960 are unpublished.
 

Bardel, G.     France    b. 27th Jan 1910, Sallanches, Haut-Savoie

Germaine Bardel, poet, author, singer and composer, studied in Annecy and was organist of the Collégiale Saint-Jacques in Sallanches until 1973. Her Point d’Orgue 1981 is unpublished.

Barottin, F.     France   fl. c. 1905

Barottin, pupil of  E. Collard, published two pieces in Le journal des organistes [LJO] – Communion 1905 and Verset: Elévation (choeur de voix célestes) 1906.

Barrus, L.     USA   b. 22nd July 1935, Sugar City, ID

LaMar Barrus studied at the University of Utah with L. Robertson and N. Rorem. He taught at Ricks College in Idaho Falls from 1960 until retirement in 1999 and was also programme director for the local radio station during that time. He published a Berceuse and a Soliloquy in The Beginning Organist Vol. 2 1973 [FLA].

Bartley, I. D.     USA   20th C

Irving Bartley, a professor at the University of New Hampshire and organist of Rochester Congregational Church from 1964, contributed to journals from [LRZ] including an Improvisation in The Organ Portfolio Dec 1942. His dates may have been b. 30th Aug 1902; d. July 1982, Dover, NH.

Basevi Gambarana, A.     Italy   b. 1957, Genoa

Andrea Basevi Gambarana, a choral director who studied at the conservatory in Turin and with B. Ferneyhough and L. Berio, teaches at the conservatory in Alessandria. His Kyrie is recorded but unpublished.

Giuseppe Basile has published a Marcia Solenne 2003 [CRR].

Bath, F. W.     England   fl. 1870’s

Bath published an Introductory Voluntary in Wood & Co.’s Organ Library Bk. 5 1877 [WOO].

Baudin, H.     France   d. 6th Apr 1900, Dortan

Henri Baudin, composer of military music, was organist of Saint-Martin in Dortan in 1885. He contributed an Entrée to Echos de l’orgue catholique Vol. 6 1885.

Baumer, H.     England   b. c. 1835; d. 29th July 1888, Watford, Hertfordshire

Henry Baumer was headmaster of Watford School of Music, retiring in 1886. Composer of a cantata and part songs, he published  a ConcludingVoluntary in the Old Style in T. L. Fowle’s Fifty Easy Voluntaries by Modern Composers c. 1867 [PIT].

John Baur studied at the University of Memphis. His Impressions V c. 1986 and Preludes  c. 1987 are unpublished.

Bax, F.L.     England    fl. 1892-1927

Lincoln Bax, who became an ARCO in 1892, was assistant organist of St.Mary’s in Crumpsall, Manchester.  He published an Opening Voluntary and Concluding Voluntary in Bk. 2 and Bk. 5 of The Choir Voluntaries series c. 1910.

Baylor, W.     USA   20th C

Walker Baylor published The Cloister (Sunrise, Mid-day, Eventide) in Organ Portraits 1951 [ESM], The God of Abraham Praise in The Organ Portfolio June 1964 [LRZ], Sanctuary Echoes in The Organ Portfolio Dec 1974 [LRZ] and Organ Suite: From the Holy Land (A Psalm of David, A Pastoral Scene) in Lorenz’s Organ Album Vol. 53 1970 [LRZ]. There was a Walker Baylor, alto saxophonist, who flourished around 1950, but I have no evidence that this was he.

Beahm, J. Y.     USA   b. 7th Apr 1930, Cherryvale, KS; d. 15th July 1988, Bison, KS

Pianist Jacquelyn Yvette Beahm studied at the University of Kansas. Her Service music on a single theme 1970 is unpublished.

Beale, T. W.     England   b. 1828, London; d. 3rd Oct 1894, Gipsy Hill, London

Thomas Willert Beale was the son of Frederick Beale, a partner in the publisher [CRA]. A pupil of G. F. Flowers, he was an amateur musician and a barrister by profession. A prolific composer of songs, operettas and piano pieces, he published under the pseudonym Walter Maynard including Lo! The peaceful shades of Evening in St. George’s Voluntaries Vol. 2 1900 [ASH]. It was originally a part-song.

Beaton, I.     USA    b. 20th May 1870, Grinnell, IA; d. 19th Jan 1929, Mount Pleasant, IA

Pianist and violinist Isabella Beaton studied in Berlin with M. Moszkowski. She taught at the Cleveland School of Music from 1899 until she opened her own music school in that city in 1910. Her Romanza (violin, piano and organ) is unpublished.

Becker, A. J.     USA   b. 30th June 1890, St. Louis, MO; d. 21st May 1950, Highland Park, MI

Angela Josephine Becker (née Landzettel) was a piano student of René Louis Becker and became his wife in 1910. Also a poet and painter, she remained an active musician giving recitals and playing in duos. She published a Grand Chorus 1922 [PRS] (also in Organ Miscellany c. 1927 [PRS]) and a Festive March 1932 [PRS] and three piano pieces.

Arsène Bedois studied in Paris at the Conservatoire and at the Schola Cantorum and also with H. Walcha and G. Leonhardt. Organist of Saint-Thomas-d’Aquin in Paris since 1964 various pieces include  Tonalea 1989 are unpublished.

Bernadino Beggio, pianist and director of contemporary music, studied at the university and conservatory in Padua. His Rosa, rosee is recorded but unpublished.

Bélédin, A. J. L.     France   b. 8th Nov 1829, Péronne, Somme; d. 21s Jan 1905, Nantes

Albert Jules Louis Bélédin, brother of Félix Bélédin and a professor at the conservatory in Nantes, was organist of Nantes Cathedral from 1889 to 1894. His son Albert Marie Joseph Bélédin (1866-1922) succeeded him to the post. The father contributed a Communion to Le Journal des Organistes 1864 [GRJ].

Pianist Jeff Bennett studied at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Resident in Nixa, Missouri, he has published All Hail the Power (12 hymn based duets for piano and organ) 1999 [BNT].

Benoist, M. de    France   19th C

Marie de Benoist studied briefly with J. Wackenthaler in Dijon. She published an Elévation sur “O Salutaris hostia” 1882 and Strophes sur “Iste confessor” 1884 in Le journal des organistes [GRJ].

A Sonata by Giuseppe Bergamini is in Autori Veniziani: Sonate per Clavicembalo o Organo 2005 [ARM].

Bergnes, J-L.     France   b. 7th Feb 1950, Carcassonne

Musicologist Jean-Louis Bergnes studied at the Schola Cantorum in Paris and with J. Langlais and M-L. Girod. He was director of the conservatory in Andorra from 1979 and then organist of the cathedral in Carcassonne from 1988, his Pièce brève 1971 is unpublished.

Bernardi, S.     Italy   b. 1577, Verona; d. 15th Feb 1637, Verona

Steffano Bernardi studied in Verona and in Rome, serving there as mdc of S. Madonna deo Monti until 1610. From 1611 he was mdc to Verona Cathedral, from 1622 to 1624 he served the Bishop of Breslau and from 1624 he worked in Salzburg, first for the court and then as mdc of the new cathedral consecrated there in 1628. He was ordained priest in 1632 and returned to his native Verona in 1634. Seven keyboard Sonatas are extant and two (in G and G-minor) are in Organ and Clavier Music from the Salzburg Court 1500–1800 2005 [BAR]. Sources variously give 1635, 1636, 1638 or 1639 for his year of death.

Bertinotti, M. J.     France   b. 27th Sep 1922, Chambéry, Savoie

Marcel Jean Bertinotti studied with M. Paponaud in Lyon and has served in the cathedral in Chambéry from 1947 to1951, in Aix-le-Bains at Notre-Dame from 1960 and Saint-Swithun from 1983. His Fantaisie sur un cantique de saint François de Sales and Et j’attends la vie du monde à venir 1987 are unpublished.

Harold Best studied in New York at the Union Theological Seminary with S. Bingham and S. Wright. He taught at Wheaton College in Illinois from 1970 until retirement and published Seven Voluntaries on American Hymn Tunes 1974 [ABG]. Choir director of Glen Ellyn Covenant Church from 1971 to 1996, his Toccata, Chaconne (after the style of Alain), Chorale Toccata on “Arise, my soul, arise” and Scherzo are unpublished.

Mainstream composer Marco Betta studied in Palermo and Florence and teaches at the V. Bellini Conservatory in Palermo. His Rosa, rosee is recorded but unpublished.

Bindi, G.     Italy   b. 1974, Cascina, Pisa

Tuscan guitarist Giordano Bindi studied at the G. Puccini Conservatory in La Spezia and in Fiesole. He teaches in Cascina, Pontedera and Pisa and has published Circalità estensionale [APU].

Bissley, J. G.     England   fl. 1920’s

John Gordon Bissley studied at Oxford University and was organist of Beaconsfield Parish Church c. 1920. His Burnham Abbey Suite based on “Praise, my soul, the King of Heaven” was privately printed in 1970.

Blackwell, A. G.     USA   b. 24th Dec 1928, Springfield, OH

Pianist Anna Gee Blackwell studied at Wright State University. Also a piano teacher she worked in the financial department of the US Air Force Aeronautical Systems Division for 32 years. Her Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord (piano and organ) 1977 may be unpublished.

The Weaver Organ & Piano Co. of York, Philadelphia published a Weaver Organ & Piano Company's March by E. Boeckel in 1891. It has been re-issued in Manufacturers Music Album 2001 [ROR].

Boerema, H.     The Netherlands   b. 1972, Groningen

Hayo Boerema studied at the conservatory in The Hague with J. T. Lemckert and at the Rotterdam Conservatory. Organist of the Grote of St. Jeroenskerk in Noordwijk-Binnen, he has published Psalm 111 in VOGG-Muziekbundel 2005 [VGG].

Boni, P. G. G.     Italy   b. 1686 in or near Bologna; d. 1741

Pietro Giuseppe Gaetano Boni composed cello and instrumental music. A Sonata VI is in Organum Italicum Vol. 3 2005 [CRR]. Many alternative dates are given for his birth and death.

Marion Boron studied at Boston University and now teaches there. Organist of Christ Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts, her Concerto (organ and orchestra) is unpublished.

Madeleine Boutron studied at the conservatories in Mauze and Nice. She taught in Paris from 1920. Her Action de graces (violin and organ) 1947 and Offertoire (violin and organ) 1947 are unpublished.

Michel Boyer, an organist in Le Mans c. 1841 and in Tours c. 1847, published a Verset pour un Magnificat du 1er mode in Le journal des organistes 1866 [GRJ].

Zilda Jennings Brown studied at Columbia University in New York. She taught in Chicago and then at Farmington State Teachers’ College, serving as an organist in Farmington. Her Berceuse, Melody, Responses and some Fugues may be unpublished.

Neely Bruce studied at the Eastman School in Rochester, New York, and at the universities of Alabama and Illinois. A professor at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, his Organ Composition Based on the Kyrie fons bonitatis 1961, Pink Music: A First Album for Organ, an Organ Concerto and Tunes ‘n’ Timbres ‘n’ Time: A History of Western Music for the Organ (16 movements) are unpublished.

Fritz Büsser, father of Henri-Paul Büsser and pupil of E. Batiste, was organist of Notre-Dame-du-Taur in Toulouse. He published a Magnificat solennelle in Le journal des organistes 1879 [GRJ].

Butler, D. L.     USA   b. 17th May 1944; d. 1st July 1990, King, WA

Douglas Lamar Butler taught at the University of Oregon and was an organist in Portland, Oregon, in California and in Georgia. He published a Chorale Prelude on “Dawn” in The Organists’s Companion Oct 1980 [MFE].

Byles, B. D.     USA    b. 1892; d. 1979

Blanche Douglas Byles, mainly a composer of songs and resident in Los Angeles, published Supplication in The Organist July 1956 [LRZ].
